Commonly used today as a type of incense, which gives off an aroma reminiscent of baked apples or burnt sugar. The tree is not cut when alive - only when it dies -( it lives for around 60-80 years). We replant 4 new trees for each one that dies to protect the ecosystem. According to many South Americans, who have used it for centuries, it is used against the "mala energía" (bad energy): in fact, it was used by the Incas for its reputed spiritual purifying properties.
